Why is This Important?

We know that each child with autism is unique, and they have their own unique personality and likes and dislikes. We also know that all children with autism (by definition) have trouble relating and communicating with others. Therefore, it is important that you consider intervention approaches that increase the child’s social learning through coordinated, interactive, play-based, and child-centered activities. However, many providers struggle to implement a play-based approach because they are unsure how to structure the learning opportunities for the child. The solution…using joint activity routines that promote shared engagement, positive affect, and capture the child’s motivation. This 3.5-hour course is designed to provide participants with an understanding of joint activity routines to increase social learning opportunities for children with ASD. Participants will learn about the 4-part framework for developing joint activity routines, the importance of social motivation, different types of routines (e.g., ‘people play’ and play with toys), and strategies to capture and contrive learning opportunities to increase the child’s engagement with others. This course includes numerous video examples to show you how to create and implement joint activity routines, while also troubleshooting what to do when things aren’t working the way you planned.
